Mass Spectrometry

Main activities

The Mass Spectrometry Laboratory performs a large variety of mass spectrometry experiments, ranging from accurate mass determination to structural characterization and quantification of chemical and biochemical entities. It is currently equipped with four High-Resolution Mass Spectrometers, three Orbitrap-type detectors and one MALDI-TOF/TOF analyser. The mass spectrometers are hyphenated to chromatographic equipment (HPLC and nanoHPLC platforms) expanding their analytical and bioanalytical capabilities to:

  • Acquisition of MS data, as well as analytical and bioanalytical method development, including:
    1. (1) chemical characterization of organic and inorganic compounds (i.e. exact mass and molecular formula determination, structural characterization through tandem MS (MSn) experiments);
      (2) quantification of chemical and biochemical species (i.e. highly specific quantification in complex and biological matrices, profiling of complex mixtures);
      (3) biomolecular identification and characterization (i.e. proteomics, including protein identification, quantification and characterization of modifications, metabolomics);
  • Provide researchers and commercial partners with access to state-of-the art MS and MS-based analytical facilities and experienced know-how in the field of High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry;
  • Offer synergy with other analytical facilities at CEMUP, namely NMR, for an integrated sample characterization;
  • Foster the education of graduate and post-graduate students at the forefront of analytical sciences.
  • The Mass Spectrometry Laboratory is part of the Portuguese Mass Spectrometry Network: www.rnem.fc.ul.pt
